Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Keymate?

An app that turns your phone into a button pad for your PC. Install the desktop app on your PC and the mobile app on your phone, pair them over the same Wi-Fi, and your phone becomes a grid of buttons. Each tap fires a hotkey, types text, launches an app or runs other actions on your PC instantly.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. It works as long as your PC and phone are on the same local Wi-Fi. Every input is sent directly over the LAN and never passes through our servers. No account required.

Why doesn't pairing work on café or hotel Wi-Fi?

Public Wi-Fi networks at cafés, hotels, and airports often enable AP isolation, which blocks devices on the same network from talking to each other. Even if your PC and phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi, they can't discover each other. Use your phone's hotspot or your home/office Wi-Fi instead.

Where is my data stored?

Your button layouts and settings stay on your PC. Pairing info is stored in your phone's secure storage. Button taps and settings sync only between paired devices on the same Wi-Fi and are never sent to our servers. See the Privacy Policy for details.

What OSes are supported?

The desktop app supports macOS 12 (Monterey) and later and Windows 10 and later. The mobile app supports iOS 16+ and Android 9+. Any combination works as long as both devices are on the same Wi-Fi.

Why does Keymate need macOS Accessibility permission?

Actions like hotkeys, text input and media keys are dispatched through macOS's Accessibility API. Without this permission your taps would do nothing on the PC, so the app guides you through System Settings to grant it.

Can I pair multiple phones to one PC?

Yes. You can pair multiple phones to one PC, and one phone can also be paired with multiple PCs.

What's the difference between Free and Pro?

Free includes a 2×3 grid (6 buttons) and core actions (hotkeys, text, app launch). Pro unlocks 3×4 and 3×5 grids (up to 15 buttons), Apple Shortcuts, and OBS scene/recording/streaming/mic controls. See the Pricing page for a full comparison.

Is Pro a subscription?

No. Pro is a one-time purchase ($14.99). Buy once, use forever — lifetime updates included.

On how many devices can I activate my license?

You can activate it on multiple PCs you own, within normal personal use. The license is non-transferable and cannot be resold.

What's your refund policy?

Refunds are available within 7 days of purchase if the license has not been activated. See the Terms of Service for details.

Is Keymate open source?

Development happens in a private repo for now. We may open-source some components later.
